Professionalism and Values

(Reprinted from the July 2005 Clarkson College student publication, The What's Up?)

A faculty and staff committee, now connected with Clarkson College Institutional Effectiveness, has been working for on a project to bring meaning to what Professionalism is as Clarkson College. This process has involved student, faculty and staff input. Now refined and ready, the definitions of professionalism have been intertwined with the Clarkson College Values of Learning, Caring, Integrity, Commitment and Excellence.

The Values and Professionalism statements will be displayed on posters, beginning this fall, in the Student Center. To provide both representation of the Values/Professionalism and recognition, photos of the Outstanding Graduate Award winners from each program will be represented on the posters. These photos will be changed with each new graduation. Similarly, for employees, the Clarkson Factor Award winner photo will be used in a poster display of the Values/Professionalism. This will be placed next to other employee recognition awards in the lobby of the main building.

Our first Outstanding Graduates to be featured are Deanna Brame, Master of Science in Nursing; Debra Waggoner, Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging; Kara Steinkraus, Associate of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant; Sharon Crary, Associate of Science in Radiologic Technology and Monica Bentzinger, Diploma in Practical Nursing.

Students, faculty and staff will begin seeing more and more of the new Values and Professionalism roll out in the fall, through various promotional efforts, in order to make these visible in our culture. Prospective students will also receive an informational sheet about this.

President, Dr. J. W. Upright said, "Our goal is for everyone associated with the College to assimilate the Values and the concepts of Professionalism in their daily walk of life. We hope that students, faculty and staff truly adopt and exude these traits not only on-campus, but as they go forward into the community, in their jobs and in working with and caring for patients and their families. This is one of the ways we uphold the Mission of the College and continue to drive toward our Vision."
