Clarkson College is committed, not only to the legal
requirements of the ADA, but to the moral and ethical responsibility to treat
all members of the community with fairness. Standards remain high, but
students are accommodated when possible to assure opportunities to
demonstrate skills and knowledge.
If you have questions when reviewing the accommodations
information or would like to schedule a meeting, please feel free to contact
Tess Warsocki. Any communication will be held in strict confidence.
The College is dedicated to providing for the
needs of enrolled students who have disabilities under section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and The Americans with Disabilities act of 1990.
The College recognizes that academically qualified students with disabilities
can succeed in college if they are provided support services and appropriate
accommodations. Efforts are made to arrange reasonable and effective
accommodations for any qualifying student with an identified disability that
is approved for services.
ELIGIBILITY
Students with disabilities have met the same admission
standards as non-disabled students.
Qualifying: A student is
eligible for accommodations when qualifying criteria set forth by the
Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD),
with support from the U.S. Department of Justice, have been met. Adequate
information from a licensed professional qualified to diagnose the particular
disability must be presented to the accommodations coordinator.
Accommodations are then determined based on the individual needs of students
and the recommendations of the documentation.
Identifying: Although
students are legally entitled to request accommodations at any time during
the semester, our faculty members are encouraged to help identify students as
soon as possible.
Confidentiality: All
documentation of a disability is treated in a confidential manner and in
accordance with the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
PROCEDURE
FOR STUDENTS SEEKING ACCOMMODATIONS
To obtain accommodations,
students must:
1. Contact the accommodations coordinator via e-mail at accommodations@clarksoncollege.edu or 552.3034 to arrange an initial meeting. At
this meeting, you will be able to discuss your documentation and your
accommodation needs. These needs must be consistent with your evaluators
documented recommendations.
2. Documentation
requirements may vary depending on the disability but should be recent,
within the past three years, and completed by a professional qualified to
diagnose a disability such as a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist,
neurologist, or when appropriate, a general practice physician. The following
information should be included.
·
Specific
diagnosis and supporting evidence such as test results, where appropriate
·
Specific
recommendations for accommodations
·
Adequate
information on the disability's current functional impact so that effective
accommodations may be identified and provided.
Reports should be on letterhead and all documentation
must be signed and dated.
The accommodations coordinator will review your
request and documentation or advise you how to pursue obtaining
documentation. Clarkson College reserves the right to deny your request if
the diagnosis is not adequately supported or properly documented. In some
cases, the College may ask you to submit additional information. The
accommodations coordinator will inform you, in a timely manner, of the
outcome of the assessment of the College. Once the College approves an
evaluation, it will be recognized for three years after the date of the
evaluation.
If a
student decides to pursue approved accommodation, he/she is responsible for
making contact with appropriate faculty, advisors, or testing personnel so
that arrangements can be made to fulfill the accommodations in a timely and
confidential manner.
