What is the difference between Service-Learning and Community Service?
Service-Learning is a credit bearing educational experience that provides the opportunity for hands on application of classroom-based learning. Students participate in an organized service activity in support of a Clarkson College related and coordinated/approved community agency(ies) or individual(s) external to the College. The activity must meet identified needs and reflect on the student’s ability to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility in fulfillment of the Mission of Clarkson College.

Community Service is a non-credit bearing based experience in which students, faculty and staff provide needed service in support of a Clarkson College related and coordinated/approved community agency(ies) or individual(s) external to the College. This activity is to be beneficial to all parties and create an enhanced sense of civic responsibility in fulfillment of the Mission of Clarkson College. This focus should stimulate new and current opportunities to enrich the health care related community service activities in which students, faculty and staff can be, and/or are currently involved.

Are all students required to complete Service-Learning and Community Service Hours?
As a graduation requirement, all students (on campus and online) must complete service hours. Graduates who do not complete the required number of service learning hours will not receive diplomas or transcripts until the hours have been completed. A minimum of 75% of required hours must be Service-Learning (SL), which are a component of specific courses as defined by each academic program.

How many hours of service are required for graduation?
The hours are as follows: (In 2005 an additional stipulation was made that 75% of required hours be Service-Learning [SL]. The new stipulation applies to students starting Clarkson College in Fall 2005.)

The Organizer is responsible for coordinating the project on behalf of the service project participants. In addition to the above, you need to do the following:
1. Notify the participants of the number of individual services hours available upon completion of the project.
2. At completion of the project, turn in a list of all participants and respective hours to the Registrar’s Office. The individual Service Activity Forms will be verified and recorded.
3. The Organizer may sign individual Service Activity Forms on behalf of the agency/organization being served so that forms may be submitted in a timely manner.
4. The Organizer may also be called upon to present a re-cap of the activity to the Service Committee.

Why do students and employees have to do community service? Don’t we have enough to do already?
The idea of service operates under the principle that people are in health care professions because they care for and value human life. It is the belief of Clarkson College that we learn and live the Values of the organization through Service that provides the opportunity to care for and be committed to our fellow human beings.

The College defines service as College activities in which students, faculty and staff physically engage in personal relationships with some identified agency(ies) or individual(s) external to Clarkson College. The purpose of such stated relationship is for both parties to mutually benefit either through direct physical interaction or intellectual exchange.
