Asan Mitchell
Growing up in Denver, Colo., Asan's disabled father took care of her and six siblings on his own. No water or electricity ran through their small apartment. Drugs and violence were the family way. An older brother had left for Calif. and brought back a new name for their crew -- the Bloods.

"My entire family, everybody, were involved in it," Asan said. "I was a straight 'A' student, but started ditching school. In the 10th grade I dropped out. I just wanted to do the stuff they were doing in the streets, smoking weed and hanging out. You still survived through it. That's all I knew."

"My dad sent me on a bus with the clothes on my back and told be never to come back. I had no idea what I was going to do," Asan said.
Matt Beeman
The Des Moines, Iowa, native participated in Jr. ROTC in high school and loved the idea of serving in uniform. He knew that he wanted to get an education and serve his country but also knew his single mother raising five boys would not be able to put him through college. "The Air Force offered my that opportunitiy," Beeman said.
Lacey Heatherington
At 5-feet tall, Lacey Heatherington is as tall as she's ever going to be. Over the years, she's endured nearly a handful of surgeries, and the pain of children's taunts. Her right eye doesn't see the way her left does and she's not the best at playing basketball.

Today, though, she's trying to survive nutrition class as she pursues a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Mike Dickinson
One might not readily expect nursing and farming to go hand in hand, but for third year BSN student, Mike Dickinson, it fits perfectly with his overall life plan.

"I chose nursing for several reasons. Health care has always been a part of my family. I come from a long line of nurses. I will be the first male nurse in the family and can't wait to carry on the tradition," Dickinson said.
Josh Georges
Josh Georges is reserved and quiet. He's not one to tell you about the hardships he's had to endure in the last year. He has what Director of Radiologic Technology Ellen Collins calls that "southern politeness."

It's no shock then, that trying to learn more about Georges' struggle to return to school after a near-fatal car crash left him in a coma is nearly left up to the imagination. Partly because he's to modest to say, and partly due to him not remembering the incident.
