Medication Aides can provide medications in nursing homes,
assisted living centers; intermediate care facilities for the mentally
retarded, schools, childcare settings; or patient homes.
A Medication Aide is trained to work under the direct supervision
of a caretaker or licensed health care professional. They provide routine
medication by oral, inhalation, topical and instillation routes when
appropriate direction and monitoring is provided.
Course
Prerequisites
- Must
be able to read, speak and write English.
- Competent
in basic mathematics skills.
- Earned
high school diploma or successfully passed the general educational
development (GED) test.
- Proof
of current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support
for the health care provider (CPR with AED training).
- Successful
completion of an approved Nurse Aide course (or its equivalent) or
minimally six months recent experience working as a Nurse Aide is required
to register. Proof of current placement on Nebraska Nurse Aide Registry
must be provided prior to start of course.
- Must
be 18 years of age or older.
- Applicants
need to be aware of the eligibility requirements for taking the state
certification testing and employment. Persons with a criminal record,
substance abuse problems or health problems that would interfere with safe
practices may be ineligible for state testing and/or employment. Many
employers may require an individual to be a Nurse Aide (CNA) before
allowing them to function as a Medication Aide.
Course
Information
- The
Clarkson College Medication Aide course provides over 40 hours of
classroom instruction related to the competencies required for medication
administration.
- Students
successfully completing the course receive a certificate of completion
from Clarkson College and qualify to take the Nebraska Department of
Health and Human Services Medication Aide written examination. Note: The State Medication Aide examination
is administered monthly outside the scope of this course at various
locations.
- Attendance at every class session
is required for completion.

Assessments
Individuals
who are in need of completing a Medication Aide Competency Assessment prior to
taking the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Medication Aide written
examination may do so at Clarkson College.

monthly, pre-registration is required. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

Cost $30 per session,
payment is due at the time of registration.

Medication Aide Competency Assessment fee is non-refundable. Refunds
are not provided if individual cancels, does not show, or fails the assessment.
Requirements:
- If an individual has
previously been on the Nebraska Medication Aide Registry, Clarkson
College will verify registry status as inactive or lapsed.
- A photo ID is required at
time of examinations.
Competency Assessment procedures:

45 minutes is scheduled individually with
Registered Nurse.
·
Students are verbally asked 20 questions to
successfully demonstrate each of the competencies as identified in Title 172
NAC 96, section 005.
·
Students must also successfully demonstrate
10 basic nursing skills related to medication administration. Students are
given 5 minutes to review all ten skills prior to testing.
·
Students must successfully pass each skill
- 70 percent required to pass each skill. Some skills may have critical steps
that must be demonstrated to pass the skill. If a critical step is not
demonstrated accurately, the student does not pass the skill and therefore does
not pass the medication aide competency.
