Nurse Refresher Clinical Rotation

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Regulation and Licensure Credentialing Division require successful completion of a clinical rotation for Nurse Refresher programs. Clinicals are arranged at various medical facilities in the greater Omaha area. Every effort is made to provide a diverse professional experience for Nurse Refresher students.

Objectives

  1. Become familiar with the clinical setting so as to provide safe and effective patient care.
  2. Maintain a professional approach to patient care.
  3. Apply effective communication strategies when working with clients, significant others, health care team members and clinical instructors.
  4. Utilize the nursing process in the delivery of safe patient care.
  5. Safely carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic regimens of the duly licensed Practioners authorized to so order such regimens in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Clinical experiences are built into the semester. Students will be provided with a detailed schedule upon registration. Clinical dates may be subject to change. Students will be informed of all changes as far in advance as possible.

Clinical Prerequisites

The following items must be on file in the Office of Professional Development before a student may participate in a scheduled clinical experience.

  • Proof of current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider certification.
  • Proof of completed immunization requirements.
  • Receipt of a temporary nursing license permit if not currently licensed.

Required Equipment for Clinical Rotation

  • Watch with a second hand
  • Stethoscope
  • Nurses scrubs (no specific brand or color)
  • Clean, white closed-toe shoes
  • Fanny pack or lab coat
  • Purses, beepers, etc. are not allowed on units

Clinical Participation

Students are expected to attend all clinical sessions for which they are scheduled. It is expected that all students be prepared to actively participate in Skills Lab Day and the clinical experience. Because absences from clinical can seriously hamper student's learning, students are to notify the clinical faculty at least one-half hour prior to the scheduled clinical if unable to attend. Being tardy or leaving early should be an exceptional occurrence with good cause. Regular or repeated absences will result in failure. Availability of clinical make-up time cannot be guaranteed. The course coordinator and Dean will determine availability. In the event that time is not available, the student will be notified and receives an unsatisfactory grade if course competencies are not met.

Please see Nurse Refresher Student Handbook for complete details regarding program policies and procedures.
