What is the difference between
Service-Learning and Community Service?
The
College defines service as College activities in which students, faculty and
staff physically engage in personal relationships with some identified
agency(ies) or individual(s) external to Clarkson College. The purpose of such
stated relationships is for both parties to mutually benefit either through
direct physical interaction or intellectual exchange.
Service-Learning is a teaching method that
enhances learning and community involvement. It is a credit-bearing educational
experience that provides the opportunity for hands-on application of classroom
based learning.
Community Service is a non-credit bearing based
experience in which students, faculty and staff provide needed service in
support of Clarkson College Mission, Vision and Values. These activities are
beneficial to all parties and create an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.
The Office of Service-Learning and
Community Service works to:
·
Enhance
and coordinate the service mission of Clarkson College,
·
Provide
faculty development regarding incorporating service-learning into credit course
curriculums and objectives.
·
Guide
all faculty and staff toward appropriate channels for service.
·
Focus
service opportunities to avoid duplication, over extension of resources (both
personnel and fiscal), and maintain focus on mission.
·
Organize
and accurately tract service hours, monetary and in-kind donations, and other
assessment data.
·
Manage
grant proposals and monies in regards to both service-learning and community
service.
