Get to Know Denise
Where are you originally from?
Beatrice, Neb., but I currently live outside of Fort Calhoun.
How long have you been working in higher education?
Since I graduated from college in 1996.
When did you join the Clarkson College community?
What do you enjoy most about your role as an Admissions Counselor?
I enjoy talking with people about what their next step will be in their education and career. I realize that it can be both a scary and exciting adventure, whether you are an incoming student who just graduated high school or if you are starting your doctoral program. In an interview, I was once asked, “If you were a tool, what tool would you be?” I said a flash light. It is so cool to show someone the path before them and watch them make it a reality.
What is your favorite Clarkson College annual event or tradition?
Orientation/Welcome Week is a great time to see all of the new faces on campus for the first time.
What hobby do you wish you had more time for?
I could go boating on the Missouri River every day, but I can’t because I wake up every morning and realize that I live in Nebraska where we have this dreadful thing called winter.
What is the most played song on your iPod?
No matter what is playing on the radio, I always fall back on my big three: Kenny Chesney, Green Day and Bowling for Soup.
What celebrity would play you in the movie of your life?
I would play myself and cast Mark Wahlberg as my husband.
What is your proudest accomplishment from the past five years?
Fall 2010 was the first time Clarkson College ever had more than 300 new students start in a semester. It seemed like such a feat at the time, and now it is more of an expectation. I am also very proud of the staff in our office and how we all work together to serve our students.
If you could only eat one food item for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Nachos—lots of opportunity there!
