Disability Services

Clarkson College is committed to providing equal access for students with disabilities by recognizing an individual’s functional limitations that may create barriers to his/her educational and college life experience. As part of this commitment, the College provides reasonable accommodations for otherwise qualified students with disabilities in compliance with the civil rights laws of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Procedure for Students Seeking Accommodations

To obtain accommodations, students must contact the accommodations coordinator via e-mail or call 402.552.3034 to arrange an initial meeting in the Accommodations Office, located on the lower level of Clarkson College. At this meeting, the student will have the opportunity to discuss his/her accommodation needs, identify functional limitations and provide supporting documentation. Conditions that may cause limitations include cognitive, physical or psychological impairments.

Documentation from a licensed health care or social work professional is required to assist in determining reasonable accommodations by providing evidence of a disability’s current functional impact. Refer to the Student Handbook for documentation requirements.

Reasonable Accommodations

Reasonable accommodations are adjustments in the learning environment that permit students with disabilities to compete on equal footing with their peers at Clarkson College. The accommodations modify non-essential elements of academic programs.

Examples of reasonable accommodations may include:

Implementation

Once reasonable accommodations are identified and warranted, the student will be informed and receive a Statement of Eligibly (SOE) from the Accommodations Office listing their accommodations. The Accommodations Office will send the SOE to each faculty member initially and each semester thereafter. Any request for changes in accommodations or if the need is no longer necessary, the student must contact the Accommodations Office immediately via email.

Clarkson College reserves the right to ask for current documentation as needed.

Confidentiality

All documentation of a disability is treated in a confidential manner and in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
