CLARKSON COLLEGE USES GRANT
FOR PROJECTS AT OPEN DOOR MISSION AND MARRS ACADEMY
Omaha, Neb.,
July 24, 2006: The
Clarkson College Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program has used the
Association of Episcopal College's grant to help benefit the community through
service learning projects at the Open Door Mission and Marrs Academy.
"The
past two years during the spring semester, our graduating PTA students have
given health and wellness presentations to women at the Open Door Mission,"
said Andreia Nebel, assistant professor of physical therapist assistant. "This
provides a free health education service to the residents of the mission and
our students gain the experience of presenting a health topic to the general
public. Two to three students each week, for nine weeks, presented topics on
balance training, strength training, walking, nutrition, exercise during
pregnancy, fitness for children, and body composition, just to name a few."
Nebel
explains that at the end of the education sessions the participants were rewarded
with items to help continue their fitness routine, such as duffel bags, socks,
water bottles and toiletries.
"The
money received from the Association of Episcopal Colleges allowed us to buy
these items for the women," Nebel said.
In
addition to helping fund activities, like the one mentioned above, the money
has also been used for equipment that is necessary for physical therapy
clinical services or treatment of patients.

"The
grant has assisted in enhancing our presentations and teaching by helping us
purchase supplies for learning stations as well as helmets and backpacks, for
the kids at Marrs Academy," Nebel said.
Clarkson
College students were able to enhance their presentations by using MRI slides,
egg shells, and even cow brains.
The
Association of Episcopal Colleges grant has helped Clarkson College serve
several populations from adults who are receiving physical therapy services at
the Open Door Mission and residents who participate in the health and wellness
presentation to school aged children at Marrs Academy who have participated in
the backpack and helmet safety programs given by Clarkson College PTA students.
