What are the prerequisites and admission requirements for the MSN program?

- Bachelor’s or higher level degree from a professionally accredited institution (NLNAC/CCNE) with a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
- Valid unencumbered RN license.
- Application and application fee.
- Scholarly essay.
- Official academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution previously attended.
- Two professional recommendations.
- Current resume.
Is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) required for admission?
No, the GRE is not required.
How often do you admit students?
Students are admitted three times per year (fall, spring and summer) for all programs, with the exception of the Nurse Anesthesia option, which admits for the fall semester only.
How many students does Clarkson College admit each term?
Clarkson College has no set limit on the number of admissions each semester.
When are the application deadlines?
Application deadline dates are posted in the Admissions section of our website. You will be informed of your admission status by mail approximately two weeks after the deadline.

Are your programs accredited?
Yes. The MSN program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The Nurse Anesthesia program is fully accredited through the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA).
How long will it take to complete the MSN program?
Depending on the option you choose and whether you attend full-time or part-time, it can take anywhere from two-and-a-half to five years. Most of our students average three years to finish. Students may take up to seven years to complete the program before being asked to reapply.
Are the Clarkson College Graduate Nursing programs entirely online?
The Health Care Administration and Nurse Educator options are completely online. The majority of the Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult–Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner options require a total of two two-day on-campus sessions.
How much professional experience is required for new students preparing to enter the MSN option?
Although students can apply without experience it is expected that students have 1-2 years experience prior to begining their specialty courses for these programs. You may start your core courses as soon as you are admitted.
How many hours are in the core component of the MSN program?
There are 19 semester hours in the core component.
How many hours are in the specialty components of the MSN program?
The specialty components hours are as follows:
- Adult–Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner – 28 credit hours
- Family Nurse Practitioner – 28 credit hours
- Nursing Education – 20 credit hours
- Nursing Health Care Administration – 23 credit hours
How many clinical hours are included in the Nurse Practitioner specialty option?
There are 650 clinical hours in the Nurse Practitioner specialty option.
How many hours are in the Nursing Education or Health Care Administration practicum?
There are 135 hours in each practicum.
How are my preceptors chosen?
You are able to choose your own preceptors and your own clinical sites within the guidelines established by Clarkson College Student Resources section of our website.
Can you fulfill the clinical hours at the facility where you currently work?
Yes, as the only requirement is that the clinical site is within the guidelines established by Clarkson College.
Can I continue to work while obtaining my MSN degree from Clarkson College?
Yes. However, due to the number of graduate credit hours, it may be difficult at times.
How many credit hours do I need to take per semester to be considered a full-time student?
Six credit hours are considered full-time.
How many graduate credits can I transfer from another institution into the Clarkson College MSN program?
You may transfer a maximum of nine graduate credit hours with a time limit of five years.
Do you accept work for life credit?
No, we do not accept work for life credit.
