Welcome to the Nurse Practitioner (NP) option of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or NP Certificate program at Clarkson College. Clarkson College offers both Family Nurse Practitioner and Adult–Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner programs.
Expectations of NP Students & Faculty
Faculty expectations for the adult learner assume that the student in the NP programs will be able to use and demonstrate critical thinking skills in proposing advanced practice therapeutic nursing interventions. The process for obtaining optimum learning experiences is the responsibility of the student. Clinical settings that you select need to provide you with opportunities to gather patient baseline information and allow you to apply principles of health assessment, interpretation, and differential diagnosis. In the advanced clinical courses you will need to develop comprehensive treatment plans with methods for evaluating the outcomes. Medical treatment modalities will be incorporated within the nurse practitioner comprehensive treatment plan to provide a framework for quality, cost-effective health care services. Each student is expected to use a holistic approach with every patient; this includes the integration of the family and environmental systems within the community setting.
Other Requirements for Preparation to Participate at Clinical Sites
Criminal Background Check and Drug Screening: Students admitted to the program are required to have a criminal background and drug screening completed. The screening(s) will be at the expense of the student. Additional background checks and/or drug screening could be required with or without cause for suspicion as required by the clinical agency or Clarkson College and at the expense of the student.
Clarkson College students may be required with or without notice to submit to additional drug testing in conjunction with various college courses, including but not limited to clinical/lab/practicum/internship, in which students/patient/client safety is an issue. The student's eligibility to attend courses and complete the required course of study may be affected by the results of drug testing.
HIPAA and Bloodborne Pathogens: A module on HIPAA regulations and infectious diseases will be included in the NS 830 course and must be completed prior to beginning any clinical.
